STEM majors provide students with a strong foundation in quantitative and analytical skills, as well as opportunities for hands-on learning, research, and innovation. Graduates with STEM degrees are in high demand in a wide range of industries, including technology, healthcare, energy, finance, manufacturing, and government. They play critical roles in addressing complex global challenges, driving economic growth, and advancing scientific knowledge and technological innovation.
What are STEM College Majors?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts strong industry growth and high-paying job opportunities for individuals completing a degree program in a STEM major. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math, and majors in STEM fields offer promising career outcomes for graduates as massive growth over the next ten years is predicted. The numerous major program options also provide room for a concentration area of study, a minor program of study, or a specialized area of study as the STEM disciplines span many academic departments.
One example of the many options a STEM major program can offer is the field of engineering. Undertaking a study in this major can allow individuals to explore their interests and expand their focus in such areas as chemistry, electronics, and aeronautics; all of which may lead to rewarding careers in STEM (architect, life scientist, engineer, social scientist) or non-STEM (construction, education, sales) occupations. Another example is the very broad field of biology. Some subfields of specialization can include agriculture, molecular biology, and biotechnology. Similar to engineering, these subfields of biology can lead to fulfilling careers in STEM (physical scientist, statistician, cell biology research associate) or non-STEM (sales, facilities management, plant breeder) occupations.
A few facts worth noting relative to occupation earnings include: 1) the highest paid STEM-educated workers are those in computer occupations with median annual earnings of $105,000; 2) Engineers were a close second with median earnings of $102,000; 3) the typical STEM worker who majored in a STEM field in college earned a higher average salary of $100,000 as opposed to $87,500 (non-STEM worker). There is definitely an earnings boost for the majority of STEM majors who pursue a career in a STEM occupation.
There are promising and varied career options as well as a consistent and lucrative workforce in the STEM industry. The many paths a major program in STEM can offer are tremendous with a plethora of job opportunities and much room for advancement.

DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) STEM Designated Degree Program List is a complete list of
fields of study that DHS considers to be science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) fields of
study for purposes of the 24-month STEM optional practical training extension described at 8 CFR 214.2(f).
Under 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(C)(2), a STEM field of study is one “included in the Department of Education’s
Classification of Instructional Programs taxonomy within the two-digit series containing engineering, biological
sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences, or a related field. In general, related fields will include fields
involving research, innovation, or development of new technologies using engineering, mathematics, computer
science, or natural sciences (including physical, biological, and agricultural sciences).”
Accordingly, this list designates the following four primary CIP series at the 2-digit CIP code level:
Engineering (14), Biological and Biomedical Sciences (26), Mathematics and Statistics (27) and Physical
Sciences (40). Any new additions to those areas will automatically be included on this STEM Designated
Degree Program List.
This list also includes CIPs from the following 18 related CIP series at the 6-digit CIP code level: Agriculture,
Agriculture Operations and Related Sciences (01); Natural Resources Conservation (03); Architecture and
Related Services (04); Communication, Journalism and Related Programs (09); Communications
Technologies/Technicians and Support Services (10); Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services
(11); Education (13); Engineering Technologies and Engineering-Related Fields (15); Military Science,
Leadership and Operational Art (28); Military Technologies and Applied Sciences (29); Multi/Interdisciplinary
Studies (30); Science Technologies/Technicians (41); Psychology (42); Homeland Security, Law Enforcement,
Firefighting and Related Protective Services (43); Social Sciences (45); Transportation and Materials Moving
(49); Health Professions and Related Programs (51); and Business, Management, Marketing and Related
Support Services (52).
